The C-27J Flying Test Bed aircraft, a technology demonstrator of the European Clean Sky 2 program, concluded the REG IADP – Regional Integrated Aircraft Demonstration Platform – technology demonstration campaign at Turin-Caselle.

Italsystem is responsible for the design, development and certification in accordance with DO178C (DAL B) of the SW for the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) of WINGTIP and WINGLET. The movement of these particular surfaces is accomplished by advanced electromechanical actuators with local digital control units and a central flight control computer that, on board the aircraft, acts as a supervisor by verifying and adjusting in real time the performance of the active aerodynamic load control and distribution system (Load Control & Alleviation) to optimize the aircraft attitude, performance and fuel consumption in the various phases of flight.

The in-flight demonstration brings to a close the cycle of technology development initiated 10 years ago in the European context with the coordination of Leonardo and the involvement of a major national supply chain integrated with a highly qualified European ecosystem, with more than 100 partners including SMEs, Research Centers, Universities and Industries.

The unique design of the Adaptive Winglet was developed by CIRA, which is responsible for the task, in collaboration with Tecnam, Umbra and Italsystem, to meet the requirements provided by Leonardo for the future TP90 regional aircraft. Its special feature is the presence of two independently movable morphing surfaces, which can increase the aerodynamic efficiency of the wing by actively controlling loads at the wing interface. ITALSYSTEM was responsible for the development and qualification of the SWs controlling these surfaces.

The movement of these particular surfaces is accomplished by advanced electromechanical actuators with local digital control units and a central flight control computer that, on board the aircraft, acts as a supervisor by checking and adjusting the performance of the active aerodynamic load control and distribution system (Load Control & Alleviation) in real time to optimize aircraft attitude, performance and fuel consumption in the various phases of flight.
